With a focus on the behavioral foundation of strategy, my research centers on two main areas—language and competition.

In terms of language, I’m interested in the role language and communication plays in market dynamics and interfirm rivalry. Hence, this stream of my research focuses on two important aspects of language use: (1) how a firm’s use of language in competitive settings may influence its rivals’ competitive behavior, and (2) how executives exert their influence on the financial community through the way they communicate. In terms of competition, I focus on the cognitive and social factors that shape firm competitive behavior. Thus, this stream of my research put a strong emphasis on the human origins of competition that have traditionally received less scholarly attention.

I use a mix of quantitative and qualitative methodologies to explore these issues, including natural language processing, text analysis, structured content analysis, event study analysis, and qualitative historical analysis.
